This textbook covers two closely connected subjects of railway science. One is the signalling principles, and the other is timetabling and capacity. Appropriate design of signalling systems requires an understanding of their capacity effects, while profound knowledge of the signalling principles is needed to establish a conflict-free timetable and to evaluate the operational capacity. The connecting link between these two knowledge areas is a chapter on train path modelling. While train path modelling requires an understanding of the signalling principles, it is the basis for timetabling and capacity. To deliver knowledge with a long-term value, his textbook concentrates rather on principles than on specific solutions. While it is based on ideas from my textbooks Systemtechnik des Schienenverkehrs and Railway Operation and Control, it follows a new approach with a different structure. |
